Dear Constituents,

Thank you for reading my March newsletter.

I hope all my Muslim constituents had a joyful Eid-al-Fitr and Jewish constituents have a very special Passover, spending time with family and loved ones. With the Easter weekend approaching, I hope all my Christian constituents have a blessed Easter – and hope everyone, regardless of your faith, have a restful bank holiday.

For all my women constituents, I hope you had a happy International Women’s Day. Do read my CNJ column about my call to protect the next generation of women and girls from violence, which you can find here.

With this campaign in mind, I was pleased to be interviewed on BBC Radio London. I stressed for the need for CCTV in nurseries, increased staff to child ratios, and a parental flare system to report safeguarding concerns. Following another horrific case of abuse in a nursery in Bristol, where CCTV was essential to the prosecution, the need for these reforms is stark. At the beginning of the month, I also took the brave parents of victims of Vincent Chan to meet Bridget Phillipson MP, the Education Secretary, and Jess Phillips MP, the Minister for Safeguarding, to reiterate these calls.

I was also horrified by the arson attack on Hatzola ambulances in Golders Green. This is a terrible antisemitic act, which Police are treating as a hate crime. Shortly after, the Security Minister, Dan Jarvis MP, met with members of the Jewish community at the JW3 Centre to offer the Government’s support at this frightening time. Do email me if there is anything I can do to support you as your MP.

Following the implementation of a social media ban for under 16s in Australia, you will have seen discussions online and in Parliament about assessing the impact of social media on a national level. I know there are strong feelings on this topic, and I want to hear from as many constituents as possible. That’s why I am asking my constituents to fill out my survey so that I can share your thoughts with the Government. Fill out my survey here: Under 16s Social Media Survey – Tulip Siddiq MP

Helping constituents will always be my number one priority. My team and I handled over 230 cases this month. If you require support or advice, please do contact my office by replying to this email or calling 020 8127 5525 (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, Tuesdays and Fridays). As your MP, I can use my role to give voice to those whose own voices are often lost in the bottom of the pile. I was therefore pleased to support a constituent in Highgate in highlighting unresolved repairs and antisocial behaviour concerns with the local council. I also sought advice for them on their housing options and how to make their situation more comfortable while they are dealing with medical difficulties. The council’s complaint process awarded them £400 in compensation for the distress and poor communication.

Finally, I am proud to represent hundreds of small businesses in Hampstead and Highgate, which make our community thrive. I would like to do more to support and profile the contribution they make. If you are a small business owner, please do reach out to my office if you would like me to visit you.

Please read on to find out about what I have been doing in Parliament and the constituency to represent you. Don’t forget to read my community bulletin for relevant notices.

Best wishes,

Tulip Siddiq

MP for Hampstead and Highgate

Conflict in the Middle East

I have been deeply concerned to see the events unfolding in the Middle East. I am doing all I can to support the Government in its efforts to deescalate the conflict. I know that many of my constituents are concerned that the UK will be dragged into this war, however the Prime Minister has been clear that we will not be. Instead, we are working with a coalition of 35 countries across the globe to push for peace in the region.

I appreciate that many of my constituents will also be worried about the impact this conflict will have on the cost of living. From today, energy bills are being cut by £100 per household and the cut to fuel duty is being extended until September. We are also investing in clean British energy to ensure our energy bills become cheaper and more stable. Furthermore, from today, the price of prescriptions are being frozen, the national minimum wage is going up, and from next week, the state pension is going up and the two child benefit cap is being scrapped.

During this time, I have also been supporting my constituents who have been been directly affected by the conflict. I was alarmed to hear that my constituent Lisa, who is pregnant and with her toddler, was stuck in Dubai without vital medication. I raised her case in Parliament, and I’m delighted to say she made it home safely to Hampstead and Highgate.

Standing Up For Women With Endometriosis

Not a single gynaecological condition is included in the disability guidance of the Equality Act. For my constituents like Sanju it means they are not listened to at work when they are suffering with endometriosis. She was unlawfully sacked for ‘underperformance’ despite suffering from crippling endometriosis. Without clear workplace protections for the condition, this is happening to countless other women across the country.

To commemorate International Women’s Day, I gave a speech in Parliament, calling on the Government to consider the impact endometriosis has on women in the workplace, so we can tackle this discrimination once and for all. It was a privilege to have Sanju in the gallery to watch the debate. You can watch my speech here.

Tackling Workplace Discrimination Against Minorities

Research shows that people with ‘Muslim sounding names’ are three times less likely to receive a job interview than those with an English sounding name. On behalf of the young Muslims in my constituency who are starting out in their careers, in Parliament, I called on the Government to tackle this unacceptable discrimination.

Welcoming Local Churches to Parliament

It was lovely to welcome Revd Catriona Laing and some members of Emmanuel Church to Parliament. I am incredibly grateful for all the work they do to care for the most vulnerable in our community. They do some great work through the West Hampstead Community Food Hub, providing hundreds of food parcels to local families, as well as providing a winter night shelter to the homeless.

Supporting Constituents with Allergies

1 in 3 people in the UK have an allergic disease such as a nut allergy. I am grateful Allergy UK for their important reminder about how to use an EpiPen. This vital first aid knowledge can save the life of an allergy sufferer and must be widely available to the public. I am looking forward to seeing the National Allergy Strategy soon and working with colleagues to support a safer world for people with allergies

Celebrating the Animal Welfare Strategy

In the recently launched Animal Welfare Strategy, the Government has laid out its commitment to phasing out the use of cages in farming, banning trail hunting and snares and ending puppy smuggling and puppy farming. The UK must make strides in this area and I am pleased to see the progress the Government is making on animal rights. I am grateful to FOUR PAWS UK and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for hosting this celebration and for their important work to deliver meaningful and much needed change for animals.
