Kilburn High Road, 20 March

My thanks go to the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) for organising a fascinating experience.

I tried on several pairs of glasses that mimicked different types of visual disability and then tried to navigate Kilburn High Road.

It really made me realise the difference between complete sight loss and partial sight loss. It also brought home the importance of a tidy pavement – uneven paving stones or signs too far out from the side make life a lot harder for those who struggle to see.

As it happens, there is a close link between this and some casework I have taken on, in which a partially-sighted person has asked me to engage the council in clearing some tree foliage that reduces the light entering his living room. Having worn these glasses, I feel like I have better sense of what he meant.
