Westminster Attacks

Parli half mast

This month, a day of debates and votes turned into a tragedy for our capital city. We lost five people in a horrific act of terrorism and dozens more were injured.

For anybody who works or has visited the Houses of Parliament, the esteem and gratitude that we reserve for the policemen who protect us is obvious. The news of PC Keith Palmer’s death shattered us all and we owe him a debt of gratitude for which words will never suffice.

Along with other MPs, I was in lockdown in the chamber for hours. The doorkeepers and staff who were locked inside with us were absolutely fantastic and I have written more about their support in this piece for the Times.

The Prime Minister and MPs from all sides condemned the atrocities, but the mood was largely one of resilience. It was a dark day for democracy but we are public servants and we will not be deterred by terrorists.

Thank you to all those who sent very kind messages – your support means a lot.
