Victory!!

The Awami League have won the elections by a landslide! Sheikh Hasina is the Prime Minister elect! I am ecstatic!

I’ve been on the campaign trail with Sheikh Hasina all day so I don’t really have the energy to write much more but I will do so tomorrow. However, I can’t resist uploading a couple of photos.

This is Sheikh Hasina’s face just before she heard the results from an unwinnable constituency –

Here she is after she heard that the Awami League’s hard work had paid off in that seat -

Election Day analysis, photos and videos coming soon. Joy Bangla!

It is a very nice and organized website, Tulip. Thanks for your articulate blogs. I could not help myself posting some of my thoughts here – I hope you do not mind. Moreover, you worked very closely with Ms. Hasina’s election campaign – so I figured you would be the most appropriate one to talk to within my reach!

I was simply surprised to see the voter turnouts. This was, perhaps, the most fair and clear elections Bangladesh has ever seen. Like you, and many others, I am also hopeful the country will be led toward the right track. Hopefully Ms. Hasina will keep the right brains beside her, and will not try to appease the power hungry politicians just for the party’s sake.

I thought, after the post 1/11 situation, some new leadership would emerge – which indeed happened; but at a very slow pace and at the very bottom of the power pyramid. However, truly, my expectation to Ms. Hasina would be to groom new leaders, and eventually relinquish her party chairwoman position to other qualified leaders in future. She can start practicing democracy within her party by living an example. It’s been the same story for our poor nation since the inception of these two parties – one leader forever, no matter how qualified the others around are – as if It’s worse than a corporate franchise that has gone south enough.

What’s the point for talking democracy while there is no practice for that within the party itself, which is supposed to lead a democratic government?

Also, I hope Ms. Hasina would appoint an interim prime minister (I am already assuming she will take the oath for PM post) until she is acquitted of the corruption trials, and not influence the cases using the executive powers.

This was a relief to see AL winning. Following BNP’s trademark style of brutality and misuse of executive power over last 4 years or so, fierce vengeance on certain officials who brought the top BNP officio in trial was well expected upon BNP’s re-election. I am glad the nation may not have to see the blood bath this time.

And I am most happy to see voter’s rejection of Jamat e Islami and their affiliates. For long the religion has been used as a vote drawing tool, and it seems, this time, voters really moved beyond religious hypnotism.

Best wishes for the newly elected government. Keep up your good work!
