The last Saturday

I have been extremely lucky both with the weather and with my fantastic group of volunteers so far and this Saturday proved to be no exception. More than 25 people turned up at 11am at Kilburn tube station and everyone was raring to go! I especially want to thank London Young Labour ( who made a special trip down to Fortune Green to help me.

For the morning session, I concentrated on the centre of the ward, where several residents complained about the graffiti around the Green. One constituent told me that he called the council about the poor lighting around the Green itself, but had had no response as yet. I also had a long conversation with a young constituent who was worried about safety, as her house had recently been burgled. Amongst other issues, some residents brought up the cemetery nearby, which they thought was poorly maintained. I have passed on all the concerns of residents to a Labour councillor in Camden and I will update my website with responses as soon as I hear back.

For the afternoon canvassing session, I was really excited (and honoured) to be joined by Nicky Gavron, Deputy Mayor of London. Nicky and I had a very productive few hours talking to constituents both about the by-election and about the mayoral elections in May. Residents were eager to offer their opinions about the state of Fortune Green (to me) and of London (to Nicky). A lot of the discussions centred on public transport and it was agreed that the frequency of buses around Camden has definitely improved in recent years.

As it was getting dark, I went back to my flat with my campaign team for some of my mother’s homemade curry and some drinks…they had earned it!
