This week, I joined with Labour colleagues to demand that the Government provides the funding to #ProtectOurNurseries.

The Government’s key manifesto promise to offer 30 hours free childcare per week is in disarray, as funding reductions from their new Early Years Funding Formula mean that many nurseries face closure.

Ministers promised to introduce the nursery provision to working parents of three and four-year-olds from September next year, but councils in hard-hit areas have had funding slashed and warn they will not be able to provide the childcare.

Ahead of the Autumn Statement, Labour is demanding the Chancellor provides parents and teachers across the country with the funding to reassure them that the long term future of nurseries will be able to meet rising costs.

The funding crisis facing nurseries was covered in the Daily Mirror, and can be read here: Tory pledge of 30 hours free childcare could collapse as nurseries run out of cash
