Passport Campaign Update

Residents may be familiar with my campaign to introduce both parents’ names to children’s passports.

Hundreds of thousands of parents have been stopped at our border in the past five years to prove they are related to their child, and I believe a simple modification of the passports could prevent undue checks. Most importantly, this would also ensure that resources are even more sharply focussed on preventing the evil that is child trafficking.

The Sunday Times recently published this piece about the issue – highlighting examples of parents who have been unnecessarily stopped at the border. More and more women are choosing to retain their maiden names, and it is incumbent upon the Government to ensure that our official registration documents and passports reflect this.
