Nazanin – One Year in Detention

Nazanin Tree - Fortune Green

My constituent, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, has been imprisoned in Iran for a year. Along with her husband, Richard, and countless others, I have called for her immediate release from the hell she has been forced to live over the past twelve months.

Nazanin has been detained on secretive charges, and has since received a 5 year sentence. The United Nations have labelled her detention as ‘arbitrary and unlawful’, and there have been worrying reports of a decline in her physical and mental health. Having gone on a hunger strike, she has told her husband that she has contemplated suicide as she continues to be denied the medical attention she needs.

In light of this tragic anniversary, I have written for the New Statesman. In the piece, I reiterate my demands for the Government to call for Nazanin’s release and for Iran to fully comply with the UN’s Bangkok Rules, which outline the international norms for the detention of female prisoners.
