Mid-week Update

It’s been a busy week in the office as I’ve been helping my boss Harry Cohen MP prepare for his ten-minute rule bill.

Harry rightly believes that sleepwalking as a defence against rape should be removed from the 2003 Sexual Offences Act. I’m glad to say that his speech went very well and the Bill passed unopposed on its first reading. You can see the BBC article about Harry here.

I’m also delighted that the plans to extend terror detention to 42 days will be dropped from the Counter-Terrorism Bill. Not only is this extremely important to civil liberties, it is also sensible of the Government to bow to Parliamentary democracy. In my opinion, extending the terror detention would just be giving the terrorists a weapon.

Anyway I am off to have dinner with a friend before watching the England vs Belarus match tonight. He suggested going to a Chinese restaurant in town but after reading this article, I’m reconsidering my options …
