Lobbying for a Clean Air Bill

Clean Air Bill

The appointment of a new Environment Secretary has provided the latest opportunity to highlight the dreadful – and unlawful – state of air quality in London. Toxic emissions cause an estimated 10,000 deaths per year in London, so it is no wonder that the problem was declared a public health emergency by a cross-party committee of MPs in April 2016.

I was therefore pleased to have been one of 98 MPs to have written to Michael Gove outlining the need for a new Clean Air Bill. Supported by Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, SNP and Green MPs the letter made several demands for sweeping change in policy. This included new powers for local authorities to enforce clean air zones, and for increased access restrictions upon the most polluted vehicles in urban areas. Coverage of the letter can be read in this article for the Guardian.
