Jo Cox – Great Get Together

Great Get Together

One year ago, my former colleague and friend Jo Cox was taken from us cruelly and well before her time. Her infectious energy and spirited determination lives on through the Great Get Together, established by her husband Brendan.

This weekend, I attended two events in Hampstead and Kilburn to mark the Great Get Together.

The first was on Summerfield Avenue in Queen’s Park, which was kindly closed off by Brent Council to allow families from across the area to come together to mark the occasion with a community lunch.

The second event was at JW3 for an initiative that spoke to Jo’s advocacy of interfaith programmes and her strident belief in bringing diverse communities together. It was a privilege to speak alongside HRH the Duchess of Kent and local residents to pay tribute to Jo.

These events provided much needed optimism in light of recent tragic events. Jo’s mantra that “together we’re far more united than the things that divide us” should serve as guidance for us all as the country faces up to the difficult challenges ahead.
