International Women’s Day – #FreeNazanin

In today’s International Women’s Day debate in Westminster, I was proud to focus on my constituent, charity worker, mother and wife, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe who was detained upon her arrival at Iran’s Khomeini airport back in April 2016.

She has been handed a five-year jail sentence, following spurious charges of espionage brought by a secretive Iranian court. This has resulted in serious consequences for her physical condition. She has become increasingly frail and unable to walk, and the effects on her mental health have left her feeling suicidal.

As of today, over 850,000 people have joined the call for Nazanin’s swift release, and it is clear that there is a coalition of politicians willing to support the government in taking action to redress cases such as hers. However, their attempts have so far failed to secure her release.

It is clear that the Prime Minister must to personally intervene to underline to the Iranian Authorities that they must immediately release this innocent British civilian.
