Good Morning Britain – #ProtectOurNurseries

Following Good Morning Britain’s recent undercover investigation into nursery schools, I welcomed the opportunity to sit down with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid to discuss their findings.

It is clear that any reported breaches of childrens’ safety require an immediate response, and it is clear that Ofsted must do more to reassure parents that background checks are thorough and being met as the law demands.

However, it is also clear that such incidents are the consequence of a sector under serious financial pressure.

In my interview, I pointed to figures that show Ofsted are spending £10m less on inspections than they were in 2010. I also highlighted the funding crisis in nursery schools. Over half of nurseries responding to the Government’s recent childcare consultation said that their biggest concerns were funding.

As Shadow Early Years Minister, I have urged the Government to offer nurseries funding guarantees at the Autumn Statement. Properly funded childcare is vital to increasing employment, reducing gender inequality, and crucially, to give every child the best start in life.

I eagerly anticipate the Chancellor’s announcement next week, and sincerely hope he will listen to Labour’s calls to #ProtectOurNurseries.
