Free Nazanin – Update

Following my Parliamentary debate on British Prisoners in Iran, I have been keen to capitalise upon the momentum the debate generated. Nazanin has been granted access to a psychiatrist for the first time in her 500 days of detention, and her family has recently met with the Minister for the Middle East. The Ministerial visit officially marked President Rouhani’s inauguration, but it is welcome that he was able to finally meet Nazanin’s parents and her daughter Gabriella.

My office has been working closely with Emily Thornberry MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary. As I said in the debate, Nazanin’s case raises broader questions about consular rights and protections that Britain offers its dual national citizens when they are in need of support abroad.

I intend to explore possible solutions to this problem in the weeks and months ahead. As such, I have requested a meeting with the Foreign Secretary to discuss the case and to better understand how the Foreign Office are pressuring their Iranian counterparts to release my constituent.
