Free Nazanin: 100 Days of Detention

Nazanin - Foreign Office Qs

My constituent, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, has been detained for 100 days with minimal contact with the outside world, whilst her daughter has had her passport confiscated and is unable to return home.

Today at Foreign Office Questions, I asked the Foreign Secretary to condemn the Iranian Authorities’ behaviour and I am disappointed that he would not do so.

Though he mentioned meetings he has attended and letters he has written, his lack of condemnation will do little to improve Nazanin’s situation, nor will it encourage those who desperately wish for her swift return to Britain. Our full exchange can be viewed below.

I then visited 10 Downing Street with Richard Ratcliffe, Nazanin’s husband, to demand that our new Prime Minister intervenes. Whilst I accept that Downing Street is undertaking a transition of personnel, there is simply no excuse for the Government’s wilful abandonment of my constituents.

As soon as she assumes the office of Prime Minister, Theresa May must outline her plan of action to secure Nazanin’s safe return. A helpful starting point would be a formal condemnation of the authorities who have detained her.
