February Constituency-wide Campaign Day

Saturday 21st February was an fantastic day of campaigning. Over 60 volunteers knocked on thousands of doors talking to residents all over Hampstead and Kilburn.

I was kept very busy during the day and I’d like to thank everyone who came out to to campaign and all of the local residents to took the time out to tell us about the issues that were most important to them.

One of the key topics that came up was renting. Labour’s policies resonated really well, particularly the national register of landlords (so there is some way of punishing bad behaviour) and the three year secure tenancies with rent controls, for tenants that want them.

It is also crucial to tackle the shortage of housing that is a key underlying cause of high rents. I was surprised and impressed at the detailed background on housing that many residents raised. Several people directly mentioned Labour’s policies to tackle developers who do not use their land and the fact that, on average, around 50% more houses were built a year under Labour’s Government than the current Government. We have a very well-informed constituency!
