Emily Thornberry MP

I organised a London Young Labour campaigning session with Emily Thornberry MP over the weekend.

Emily joined the Labour Party when she was 17, motivated by her experiences of being raised by her mother, a single parent living on a council estate. She has lived in Islington for the last 15 years and has three young children. She spoke to the LYL women about how she balances life as an MP and a mother.

It was one of our first all-women sessions and it went really well. I’ll arrange a few more sessions after my exams in May! If you are a female MP in London and would like us to campaign for you over the summer, please do contact me.

We went door knocking and asked constituents to sign a petition for free school meals. You can read more about the Free School Meals campaign that the Labour Group of Concillors have been running here.

The response to the petition was positive and the main complaints were about antisocial behaviour and dog fouling. All casework was reported back to Emily and her team.

LYL members will see a familiar face in the photo! Steph is the Labour Party Action Team Member in the area we were campaigning in. She was our fantastic LYL secretary last year and I hope she’s elected as a councillor in May 2010.

Anyway, I am off to watch some football. Let’s see what the future holds for Man United!
