Debate on British Prisoners in Iran – #FreeNazanin

Richard Nazanin

Today in Parliament I will be leading a debate on British Prisoners in Iran, focussing on the plight of my constituent Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe. The debate will take place between 4.30 and 5.30 and may be watched live at this link.

In April 2016, Nazanin went to see her parents in Tehran and took her two year old daughter Gabriella with her. She was arrested at Khomeini Airport and imprisoned in solitary confinement. Her daughter was placed with her grandparents and has effectively lived half of her short life in exile.

For the past 15 months I have supported Richard Ratcliffe (Nazanin’s husband), charities such as Redress and Amnesty International, and nearly one million people who have signed a petition demanding Nazanin’s immediate release.

The call has been echoed by six Special Rapporteurs of the United Nations, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, 216 MPs and Peers of all parties, and a European Parliament resolution.

In today’s debate, I will have the opportunity to question the Minister of State for the Middle East, Alistair Burt, and I will be once again demanding that the Government call for Nazanin’s release. Further coverage of the debate can be read in The Times, the Guardian, and Politics Home.
