Childcare Vouchers

The Government is currently altering the way in which Childcare support is provided to parents across the country. They are in the process of rolling out tax free childcare, a scheme intended to replace the current offer of childcare vouchers.

Though I welcome the extension of any childcare support for parents, the latest moves are unfortunately a step in the wrong direction. Concerns about the introduction of tax-free childcare have been wide ranging, from the belief that it will leave many working families financially worse off, to the IT issues that have dogged the roll out of the scheme.

The Government are also phasing out childcare vouchers, with the cut-off date being April 2018. With so much uncertainty over the website that families can receive tax free childcare, to the financial cliff edge that many will face – I believe the deadline should be extended to protect those who are most in need of support.

In the recent Westminster Hall debate on this matter, I raised these concerns to the frontbench spokesperson. You can read that full exchange in Hansard, here.
