BBC World Interview

Thank you for your emails about my interview on BBC World where I appeared as the Awami League spokesperson. It was on at 6pm GMT and will probably be repeated this evening.

The main question I was asked was about the involvement of an outside group in organising this mutiny. I explained that this mutiny was clearly not a spontaneous uprising but it is not possible at this stage to speculate about who was behind the mutiny. The mutiny started when a small group of people in BDR uniforms started shooting but these people had their faces covered and we just do not know who this group were.

I was also asked about political motivation behind this mutiny but again, I replied that although this has not been ruled out, it is too early to confirm anything.

In my interview I emphasised that Sheikh Hasina has set up an Inquiry Committee which will have representatives from the Home Ministry, representatives from the Law Ministry, representatives from the army and from her office. This Committee will launch a thorough investigation into the mutiny and hopefully this will give us some answers about the motives behind this ordeal.

My interview ended with a question about the army. In my opinion – if this mutiny was carried out in order to incite the army, it failed miserably. The army have acted with exemplary discipline and have followed orders from the Prime Minister diligently. Under Sheikh Hasina’s instructions, the army entered the BDR HQ and helped with the search and rescue opertation.

I stated that I was proud of the army which I’m sure is the case for many Bengalis today.
