Bangladesh Mutiny

Thank you for your emails about the Bangladesh Mutiny. I will reply to all your queries as soon as I have more information.

Most of the emails have been about the treatment of the officers who were tragically killed or those who have been wounded. I spoke to Sheikh Hasina about this earlier today and she told me that the next three days are being observed as national mourning days. The departed will be given state burials and the flags are currently being flown at half-mast.

Sheikh Hasina also said that she personally went and met several of the bereaved families and wants to bear the educational expenses of the children who lost their fathers. She expressed her horror at the brutality and told me that several of her party members have lost family members. Furthermore the Health Minister (who is a doctor himself) is going around and visiting the wounded today.

Regarding the accountability of those who killed officers – Sheikh Hasina clearly told me that anyone who killed people, committed arson and looted the officer’s houses will be given exemplary punishment through the court of law.

I’ll speak to her and my mother who is currently in Bangladesh tonight and blog about further developments. Meanwhile please do email me if you have any questions or comments.
